Philip Wolstanholme, 26, has been volunteering with Out & About for four years.
Experiences gained from his role as a volunteer for Out & About have been very different from those gained in his familiar employment as a Corporal at RAF Marham, Norfolk.
As a volunteer, Philip has undertaken a number of roles including directly supporting disabled children and young people in leisure activities, as well as co-ordinating and leading an annual fundraising event, The Marham 10 Mile Road Race and Fun Run.
To date, Philip has said that his journey has been exciting, rewarding and at times quite moving. By directly supporting disabled children and young people in their leisure activities, Philip has been able to make a positive lasting difference in their lives. He says,
“I've gained great experience by participating in a variety of activities that have helped me to develop my confidence, communication, leadership and other skills. Not only do I feel great achievement and satisfaction but I have also been able to add to my CV as well as broaden my knowledge. It’s brilliant to be able to achieve all this as well as knowing that you’re working alongside a young person, enabling them to go out and participate in their chosen leisure activity.”
Inspired by volunteering, Philip then decided to get involved in raising funds for Out & About so he organised the first Marham Road Race and Fun Run in 2006. The event is still going strong today and Philip says
“The race raises awareness and encourages more people to get involved. I enjoy fundraising for Out & About and I know that it benefits a worthwhile cause.”
Philip still continues with volunteering and now hopes that his achievement and satisfaction gained from volunteering will provide others with positive attitude, inspiring them to give something back into their community.
