SUFFOLK: A group of disabled young people from the Young Voices Youth Parliament and Hearing Voices Steering Group are working with Suffolk Police to develop more accessible personal safety information.
The need for this information was identified at a recent Youth Parliament Day, where disabled young people discussed topics around keeping safe. Representatives from Suffolk Police joined in the discussions and this was followed by an invitation from Chief Inspector Kerry Cutler to the young people asking them to work with Suffolk Police to develop their thoughts further.
The young people spent a productive day at Suffolk Police HQ discussing and working through their ideas with members of the Police around the three key topics of Cyber bullying, Respect and Drinking Responsibly.
Cyber bullying – an animated film to raise awareness of Cyber bullying and how to stay safe
Drinking – a Drinking Scale poster showing how different levels of drink affect people
Respect – a ‘Respect Spider’ showing the different areas that young people think should be considered
Suffolk Police will continue to work in consultation with these young people to take these fantastic initiatives further and use them in future personal safety awareness campaigns.
Suffolk Police also gave the young people an opportunity to speak to police officers from the different sectors of the force including a Police helicopter observer and an officer from the Road Policing Unit. This gave the group a chance to hear more about what the Police do on a day to day basis.
The Young Voices Youth Parliament is a joint initiative between Out & About and Voiceability.
